I am going to apply shortly to the MS program in MIS offered by Metropolitan State University in Minnesota. I have written my goals essay for the same and I request the members of the forum to please review it and provide me your valuable feedback. Please find below my essay:
Name: Anupama Singhal.
Course: Masters of Management Information Systems (MMIS).
After a bachelors and a master's degree in arts and about two years of a work experience in the fashion and apparel industry I want to challenge myself and earn a degree in IT. I want to make a career in information technology. A lot of people in the country I come from would find it unusual. Perhaps it has something to do with my love for computers and technology which started when my father gifted me a laptop when I was 14. I instantly fell in love with my laptop and used to spend hours playing games on it. It was an addiction back then and even today.
I have had two passions when I was a kid, one was for the arts and the other was for technology. It was my creativity and passion for the arts which led me to pursue a master's degree in arts from the UK, and now I think it's the time that I pursue my passion for technology. The kind of determination I have shown to pursue and successfully complete my master's course in the arts gives me the confidence that I can successfully take this challenge.
Since my school days I have been comfortable with computers and technology. Even though in my high school I had arts as a major I chose informatics as my elective which involved DBMS language FoxPro, programming languages C and HTML and object oriented language C++. I liked informatics and I performed well in the subject. Apart from core IT concepts, I am interested in ERP systems like SAP.I have read about it and I am amazed with the kind of things this software can do and the efficiency with which it enables the business to run. I want to utilize my domain experience in fashion, apparel and sales and merge it with relevant modules in SAP to strengthen my technical skills as a business analyst. I don't want to be just a professional who know SAP, rather I want to be an analyst who understands the complete IT infrastructure of a company, which is where this MMIS program will help me.
During my bachelors, I was always inclined towards using latest design software available at that time. I always believed technology can provide us maximum precision with consistency at the minimum cost. I have been a very data driven person. I want to take the next step in the same direction and acquire technical expertise by combining my data analysis skills with technology so that I could provide smart business solutions to my future employer and add value to their business.
I got married in 2012 and I quit my job, came to US and joined my husband. My dream to pursue my passion in technology came along with me. I always knew the quality of education in the United States is one of the best in the world, and that aspect itself increased my interest manifolds. I started searching for good courses offered in information technology by reputed universities and there I came across the MMIS program offered by Metropolitan State University.
I went through the description of each course and instantly felt connected with the program. I made several calls to the University for inquiring more about the course and the admission process and even attended a session on the MMIS program by Dr. David Bouchard. After attending the session I was convinced this course is meant for me.
I am hopeful that I will get the opportunity to pursue my passion and execute my plan and the vision I have for my career and emerge as a sound professional who is ready to contribute to the success of the business and the society as a whole.
Statement of Purpose - Information Management
In the complex and interconnected world of international business, the science of information management is increasingly important. With my extensive educational background in computers, I have become quite interested and skilled in this area. However, if I am to prepare myself for the challenges of a successful future career, it is essential that I combine my background in computers with further education in management. Such an education will give me a unique competitive advantage in the international workplace. The master’s program in Information Management at your university is therefore ideal for my professional goals.
I earned my Bachelors’ degree in Computer: Software Development at Goodwell University in [country]. At this school, I acquired thorough and comprehensive training in computers and software. Because of my longstanding interest in computers and my desire to focus my career in this field, I was very enthusiastic in my studies. Also, because of my desire to gain business-related skills, I have taken elective courses related to business, economics, management, and marketing. I feel strongly that it is more important that I receive a more business- and management-oriented education than a strictly computer-based education. For this reason, I have decided to build upon my undergraduate education by studying in your master’s program in Information Management.
If given the opportunity to join your Information Management program, I will be able to utilize my extensive background in computers, while learning additional skills and techniques that will be greatly beneficial to my future career development. I hope to use my skills and background to learn how to effectively analyze and solve business problems. Modern businesses are heavily reliant on information systems, and this is integral to the successful management of an organization. I am eager to explore this field in the presence of the esteemed professors at your university. After researching your program, I am well aware of the quality of education that is available, and this has especially motivated me to pursue a slightly altered educational path, as the challenges and opportunities available at your university will allow my potential to grow unfettered.
After I graduate from your program, I will be uniquely prepared to face the challenges of the international business world. My short term goal is to seek employment in the UK that could serve as a practical supplement to my education. In the long-term, I plan to return to my native country, where the fast-developing economy requires experienced management professionals. The role of information management will be of increased importance in the coming years, and I plan to use my computing and management background to assist in the structured development of domestic companies. Your master’s program in Information Management will allow me to achieve these goals, and I therefore greatly appreciate your consideration of my application.
